Carstares, in wig and wearing bands and a black gown, is shown seated. In front of him is a table on which there is a Greek Testament in manuscript, held upright by his right hand. Carstares was subjected to the thumbscrews for his alleged subversive activities and the deformity of his thumbs can be seen in the painting.
