This painting is part of the 'Cento Series', three of which were donated to Maggie's by the artist in 2011. He started the series 20 years previously and then returned to it. These are oil paintings on wax paper which allows Innes to cover the surface of the paper with oil paint and then, through dissolving the paint with turpentine and the wax within the paper, to create an image which becomes part of the paper. The work is given its own intrinsic history; the removed line often appears to have formed itself.
Innes was born in Edinburgh and studied at Gray’s School of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art. He has exhibited widely, both in Britain and internationally. He was short listed for the Turner Prize in 1995.
