This is one of a set of seven trompe l'oeil (deceive the eye) paintings that were painted for the architect Denis Martineau (1907–1975), the previous owner and donor of Mompesson House. The other themes are Music, Agriculture, Architecture and Art and these are displayed flanked by two paintings of urns in niches. The subjects, which may have reflected the commissioner's interests, loosely refer to some of the liberal and mechanic arts.
