Laura Knight was born in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Her mother taught and encouraged her to become an artist from an early age. She studied art in Nottingham and Paris. Knight is known chiefly for her technically accomplished paintings of ballet, gypsies, travelling players and circus scenes. She once joined the circus on a tour of Midland towns. The horse in this painting is a Knapstroper, a large spotted German horse.
