Originally shaped as an octagon (the additions may date from the seventeenth century), this composition was intended to hang high, perhaps as a prominent element in a wall or ceiling decoration in a carved and gilded surround. Suggestions for the dating have varied from the mid-1550s to the early 1570s. Domenico Tintoretto painted a variation of this painting now in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart.
