Johann Zoffany was the son of an architect. He was born in what is now Germany and came to England in 1779. He had great success with different types of group paintings, including theatrical scenes and family portraits.
Pictures of street traders were popular in England at this time. One of the boys in this scene is eating a sandwich, invented only six years earlier!
