The paint is thinly applied and the tones are muted. The work is characteristic of Whistler. Like Sickert, Rutherford preferred the loose handling of paint, sometimes leaving areas of the canvas untouched. It is clear that Sickert was a great influence upon Rutherford. Sickert instilled in Rutherford the need to maintain the balance between definition and suggestion.
