The Merryweather was the first motorised fire engine obtained by the brigade in 1906. The fuel for this unusual vehicle was paraffin. Its only serious deficiency was that it was difficult to steer and got caught up in tram lines, when, local legend alleges, it sometimes ended up in the tramway depot!
