A ship’s portrait of the brigantine ‘L’Avennire’ shown broadside-on. She is shown making her way through the deep ocean with both her deck houses clearly visible. A number of sailors are also shown on deck. Brigantines were two-masted vessels and ‘L’Avennire’ probably travelled to Australia in the last few decades before sail gave way to steam.
The artist was a marine painter who, together with his son, worked in France. The painting is signed ‘ED Adam 1881’.
