The signal pennants confirm that this ship is the ‘Isabella Leith’. There is a label on the back of the painting which states ‘Mr. George Bell 2 Anthony Street / Black East / London Brig Isabella Leith Captain Robertson in a gale of wind off the Cape of Good Hope on the 12th of February’. She was built in Sunderland in 1848, and foundered on the 18 November 1888, off Durham (60 miles ESE of the Farne Islands.) The Master of the ship Charles Barkaway and his crew were picked up by another ship.
