Christopher Wood met Ben and Winifred Nicholson in 1926 and painted with them in St Ives. It is possible to imagine that this handsome and melancholy young man, his hands entangled in nets, is the artist himself. His friends often remarked on his charm and good looks but his seemingly happy and fruitful life became an increasing struggle against addiction.
