Born in Hartlepool, Cockrill was an influential teacher at several colleges, including Liverpool College of Art, the Royal College of Art and Saint Martin’s School of Art. Beginning in a style of photographic realism, he painted landscapes in a more Expressionist style from the 1970s, turning to abstraction in more recent years.
