The shipwrecked party being rescued was bound for Naples according to the address on the trunk in the left foreground. Though not an exact topographical view, it was clearly inspired by the coast near Naples. Bonavia worked in Naples and was influenced by the work of the French seascape artist Claude-Joseph Vernet who visited the city in 1737 and 1746.
