This painting was Giles's 'field sketch' for the larger version painted at Haddo House for the Earl of Aberdeen. The Earl's other property, Buchanness Lodge, is seen in the right middle distance in front of the Buchanness Lighthouse. The quarry in the foreground provided much of the building stone for Peterhead and is a rare depiction of this industry.
