Frank Auerbach was born in Berlin and sent to an English boarding school at the age of seven. In 1947 he moved to London where he has lived and worked since. A highly influential figure in British art, Auerbach’s work is characterised by his heavy application and layering of paint. He scrapes away and re-paints an image many times before he considers it finished.
