Dorothy Carr married painter Francis Carr (before this her name was Sarah Firmir), and both visited the Spennymoor Settlement in County Durham in 1951. They ran classes for coal miner artists and produced their own work. Francis and Dorothy Carr are sometimes attributed as the first artists to use screen printing as a fine art in its own right.
