This painting relates to an earlier double-portrait by Slaughter of Walpole and his secretary Henry Legg (1740). Walpole's pose is identical in both, apart from the sitter's left hand. He is shown seated in the robes of Chancellor of the Exchequer with his garter ribbon, badge and star proudly displayed.
