This painting depicts Sir Richard Lee Knowles MP, who was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1899. After the Boer War, Lee Knowles sought official recognition for the Lancashire Fusiliers and a monument was erected in their honour in Chapel Street, Salford.
