This portrait was commissioned by Bath’s City Council, and has always hung in a prominent position in the Guildhall. Although not now well known, Pratt was a significant figure in 18th century Britain. He was Attorney General, Lord Chancellor and MP for Bath, among a host of political posts.
Many significant local figures sat for William Hoare, as well as spa visitors keen for a portrait as a memento of their visit to Bath.
