This painting was painted while Frederick (1709–1785) was on the Grand Tour. His antiquarian and numismatic interests are emphasised. Frederick was MP for New Shoreham (1746–1754) and Queenborough (1754–1784) and was made Knight of the Bath in 1761. From 1741 to 1766 Casali worked for Frederick and other patrons in England.
