This self portrait of Somerled Macdonald was presented to Inverness by his wife in 1948. Somerled Macdonald was born at Orbost, Isle of Skye in August 1868, third son of Lachlan Macdonald of Orbost.
Macdonald studied art in London and Paris. He was well known for his paintings of Highland scenes and for his portraits.
Macdonald also studied bagpipe music and was a notable performer, winning several prizes at the Scottish Piping Society's championships. He died on 26th March 1948.
