Known as the 'Streatham' painting, the original painting this piece was copied after was painted for Henry Thrale the Brewer and his wife Hester, to hang in their gallery of famous friends. One of the most famous images of Johnson, his executor and biographer Sir John Hawkins described the portrait as a good likeness of Johnson.
