Attributed to Andrea Sacchi when in the possession of the previous owner. Apparently painted by an Italian hand, possibly in the seventeenth or eighteenth century. Lettering in reverse as spoken by Christ on the cross to St Thomas. On the left, Saint Thomas Aquinas is seated and writing a folio volume on a desk or diagonal board. Right, a crucifix and, behind, an open book lying on top of two closed books, one of which is inscribed on the spine 'Super IV. Sententiaru', i.e. Saint Thomas's commentary on Peter Lombard's Sentences (scripta super IV libros sententiarum), written c.1256.
