The Right Reverend Thomas Nicholson was the First Vicar Apostolic of Scotland, appointed in 1694, during a lull in the persecution of Catholics in Scotland. He was a convert to Catholicism. During his term of office, he travelled extensively and successively throughout the whole of Scotland, including the far-flung islands, administering sacred sacraments to many who had received none since the extinction of the old hierarchy.
