In his portrait, Professor Shaw is wearing the Vice Chancellor gown of the university. This gown is made from black Paisley brocade with a square collar at the back of red Paisley brocade edged with gold lace. The sleeves are trimmed above and below the sleeve opening with gold ornaments of a traditional pattern. With this gown a black velvet mortar board cap is worn with gold button and tassel and edged with one-inch gold lace. The portrait is set in Professor Shaw’s home and illustrates his love of art and walking in Scotland and abroad.
