This portrait is of Reverend R. E. G. Newman, Padre of 2/5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers during the First World War. He was awarded the Military Cross at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 for ministering to the wounded while under enemy fire. He was later awarded a bar to his Military Cross for escaping from a captured aid post and providing an accurate report to the Commanding Officer.
