This portrait was once believed to be that of Dr John Dee, the noted English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and occultist, among other things. However, the costume suggests it shows a seventeenth-century continental churchman. The painting came from Reverend Canon Griffiths Thomas who (it is believed) got it from a Mr Tonge's collection in Cheshire, possibly around 1920. The Reverend Canon was possibly a friend or acquaintence of Nant Y Groes, Whittion, Radnorshire.
