This three-quarter-length portrait depicts an unknown man dressed in eighteenth-century costume. He is facing to the right with his left hand on his hip and his right hand pointing to a ship in the distance on the horizon behind him, his head turned towards us.
It was previously thought to be a portrait of Admiral Sir Clowdisley Shovel but, if so, it must be painted from an earlier portrait as Shovel died around 60 years before it was painted.
