The artist, Philippe Mercier, was of Huguenot descent and from 1728 was the principal painter to Frederick, Prince of Wales. His influence on English painting has been seen as introducing Watteau and the French taste, as well as pioneering the Conversation piece and the Fancy picture; furthermore his female portraits are thought to have influenced artists such as the young Joshua Reynolds.
