The artist was born in Paris and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. He then studied at the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet (1767–1824). Gudin first exhibited at the Salon in 1822, wining a prestigious gold medal in 1824. He became the leading painter of marine subjects and was appointed Peintre de la Marine Royale in 1827. Gudin was a friend of John and Joséphine Bowes and the inscription ‘offert à Mme Bowes T.Gudin 1863’ suggests that this work was a gift to Joséphine.
