This painting is a portrait of Alice Worswick, wife of Thomas Worswick. She was the daughter of Robert Gillow, founder of the cabinetmakers, Gillows of Lancaster, in 1730. Worswick was a local clockmaker and banker whom Alice married in 1756. They had nine children and she was a well-respected member of the local community as was noted on her death in 1802, at seventy years of age.
