Born in Pontypool, Thomas Barker lived and worked in Bath for most of his life. As a young man, he was taken under the wing of local businessman Charles Spackman. Spackman sent Barker to Italy to improve his artistic skills.
Throughout his career, Barker enjoyed painting dramatic, craggy landscapes, perhaps inspired by scenery he had experienced abroad as a young man.
