This seventeenth-century painting shows Moses holding the Tablets of the Law that list the Ten Commandments in Hebrew. His brother Aaron, the first high priest, stands on the right. Moses was the first spiritual and national leader of the Jewish people. He led them out of slavery in Egypt to the promised land of Israel. During this journey through the desert, which lasted 40 years, God called Moses up to Mount Sinai.
