This is part of a group of five portraits of the Davis family, all painted by Thomas Beach. Although dressed as a bride, this dates from two years before Miss Davis’s wedding. She was married in 1782 in Bath Abbey. A wedding in the Abbey would have been a grand occasion with many guests. Her father Charles ran a successful art supplies business and also painted portraits. This placed him at the centre of Georgian Bath’s lively art scene, and thus the Davis family would have been well-connected.
