David Prudhoe has often been described as a socialist painter. Nicknamed the 'Castleford Brick painter', the town and its terraced houses were a common theme in his work and 'Miners' is no exception. Here he captures everyday working life in a mining community. People gather around waiting to collect their coal allowance while a housewife hangs out her washing, every aspect of their lives overshadowed by the pit.
