In 1913, the year in which the artist converted to Catholicism, she was commissioned by the Meudon Chapter of the Order of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Virgin of Tours to paint a portrait of their founder, Mère Marie Poussepin (1653–1744). This picture was based on a prayer card of 1911 with a portrait of Mère Poussepin, derived from an eighteenth-century oil painting. Between 1913 and 1920 John worked on at least six versions of the portrait, of which the primary example was installed at the convent.
