Sitting at a rough table, perhaps in an inn, a man smokes a long clay pipe. This small painting was thought to be the work of Adriaen Brouwer and was later associated with Gerard Terborch, but while it replicates these Dutch artists' interest in scenes of everyday life, it does not exhibit the same technical skill evident in their autograph paintings.
