The dots are all the same grey tone, yet they appear to lighten as they near the bottom of the picture. This is due to the darkening of the background. The second effect is seen in the banding, or gradations, in the background. Each band looks darker at one edge than the other which gives an almost fluted appearance, however each is a solid tone. The effect is caused by our comparison with the neighbouring bands.
