This painting shows the house that eighteenth-century writer Samuel Johnson’s father Michael built, and in which Johnson was born. The family’s bookshop was on the ground floor and it faced onto the market square. The statue to the left of the image is of Johnson, facing his former residence. The house itself is now The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum (www.lichfield.gov.uk/sjmuseum).
