One of several copies, with minor variants, painted by Pater after Watteau's 'The Pleasures of the Dance' (London, Dulwich Picture Gallery). Although recognised in 1860 as the work of Pater by the art historian Thoré-Bürger when in the collection of the duc de Morny, it appeared at the latter's sale under an attribution to Watteau in 1865. It sold for the considerable sum of 37,000 francs (about £1,480) to the 4th Marquess of Hertford, and so probably represents one of his few errors of connoisseurship. It was listed under an attribution to Watteau in the probate inventory of his rue Laffitte apartment in 1871.
