The sitter in this portrait, Lelio Torelli, was portrayed when he was 39 years old, shortly after he was appointed Governor of Rimini by Pandolfo Malatesta. In later years, Torelli's role as secretary of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici made him an important figure within Tuscan humanist circles. The author Benedetto Varchi referred to Torelli as a man 'of generosity, as well as rather singular learning'.
