Jan van Goyen was born in Leyden. His work is marked by a palette of soft browns and greys applied with a broad technique in which drawing is as conspicuous an element as painting. This painting is characteristic of works by him. This painting is one of a generous gift of seven oil paintings presented anonymously to the Art Fund for display in the Judges' Lodgings, Lancaster. They have remained together as a collection since they were brought together in London in the late nineteenth century.
