Charles (1536–1624), Baron Howard of Effingham (subsequently 1st Earl of Nottingham, KG), the Lieutenant-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy and Army (to whom Sir Francis Drake was second-in-command) is seen on board his flagship, the 'Ark Royal'. On the evening of 25th July 1588, following a successful engagement with the Spanish off the Isle of Wight, he knighted John Hawkins (his rear-admiral), Martin Frobisher (commander of the 'Triumph') and Lord Thomas Howard (later 1st Baron Howard de Walden and Earl of Suffolk) for their gallantry.
