John Satterthwaite was the one of the principal members of the Satterthwaite family of Lancaster merchants. His father, Benjamin Satterthwaite, was an agent in Barbados for Robert Gillow, the founder of the cabinet-making company Gillows of Lancaster. On 15 June 1777 John married Mary Rawlins, daughter of a plantation owner in St Kitts in the West Indies.
