Historical and landscape painter; left Newcastle to work as a china painter in London (1806); his vast and sublime paintings of biblical, religious and literary themes were widely circulated as engravings; devoted much of his resources in later life to idealistic schemes including the improvement of London's water supply.The background is suggestive of Martin's own pictures with their incredible architecture and atmosphere of cataclysmic doom.
