James, Duke of York (1633–1701), ascended to the throne on the death of his brother in 1685. He also wears the blue sash of the Order of the Garter. This painting, designed as a pendant to that of 'Charles II', by the same artist, has a matching frame made in the studio of Grinling Gibbons.
