There are many similar scenes by this artist, and the dried plaice hanging over the edge of the table is almost his hallmark. This scene occurs in a tavern scene. Smoked or salted fish was a common accompaniment to wine and beer, and was believed to counteract the effects of over-imbibing and add spice to lovemaking.
