In this pendant (pair) to the artist's 'Horsemen Halted in a Wood', also at Dyrham Park, a group of horsemen have halted to water their mounts at a cottage. It is signed on the fence at the right of the composition. Both paintings were certainly at Dyrham Park by 1839, when they were mentioned in the inventory, but they are likely to have been purchased earlier, probably by William Blathwayt I (1649?–1717) who formed the collection of Dutch art at Dyrham.
