This work was commissioned for the Fracture Clinic in the Hospital. The artist uses colour to create a sense of energy and vitality in his paintings. The layered, textured surface of the acrylic paint gives the illusion of depth to the painting, making it a rich and intense tapestry of colour. The work of the Abstract Impressionists had an enormous effect on Irvin, who after seeing their work exhibited in New York moved away from figurative representation towards the abstract style that we see here.
