Henry Pierrepont (1607–1680) was the first Marquis of Dorchester. He donated his library of books on medicine, law and botany to the Royal College of Physicians in 1680, on the condition that the collection should never be broken up or sold. He was repaid by being made the first honorary fellow of the RCP. Dorchester’s fiery nature has been well-recorded. He is known to have challenged men to duels to protect the honour of his family, and was reprimanded at the Tower of London for pulling a Duke’s hair in the House of Lords during a scuffle.
